March Highlight - Mercury

Mercury only recently emerged from the glare of the sun to become visible in the morning sky. It reaches its greatest elongation on the 3rd. Expect to see it rise about 70 minutes ahead of the sun and hang around 12 degrees above the horizon as the sun comes up.

Named after the Roman god of commerce, travel and thievery, Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the eighth largest. Mercury's existence has been known of since before the third century BC. The Greeks gave it two names, Apollo for when it appeared as a morning star and Hermes when it came as an evening star.

It was almost like handing over the reigns, just eleven months apart. Galileo Galilei died at Arcetri, near Florence, on January 8, 1642. More than nine hundred miles away and eleven months later, Hannah Newton gave birth to a premature baby boy on Christmas day near Grantham in Lincolnshire, England.
